Thanks for the many calls and emails from concerned customers wanting an update about whether Grammie’s Attic will still be in business after February 10 or whether we’ll be one of the thousands to succumb to National Bankruptcy Day when CSPIA is implemented. I want to assure you that we’re doing everything possible to continue to offer you safe beautiful clothes for your babies. Here’s our action plan:

1. We’ve requested certificates of compliance from all of our major manufacturers. We have received some and we have assurances of more to come before the deadline, so we know that some of our products have already been tested and fall within the compliance guidelines.

2. I’ve spoken directly with the head of compliance at the CPSC, who recommended XRF testing of a representative sample of our existing inventory for items without certificates of compliance. Next week we will begin XRF screening of our products to ensure that they fall within the required lead limits. Based upon a meeting I attended at the CPSC where clear scientific evidence was presented that there’s no lead in textiles, I hope to have very positive results.

3. I continue to contact congressional representatives, sign petitions, participate in forums and activist groups, and vote for any and all efforts that will delay the implementation of this law until the CSPC can formulate reasonable testing standards that will keep our children safe without destroying the businesses that clothe and support them.

Please help us by visiting the links at the right and getting the word out. Remember, this law affects far more than clothing businesses. Handmade toy makers, crafts people and artisans, libraries, homeschoolers and Sunday school teachers are all affected, too, because every product purchased for use by a child under the age of 12 has to be found within the legal limits for lead or destroyed.

I’ve been thinking about all my 4000+ inventory items and what I’ll be able to legally sell after National Bankruptcy Day. Grammie’s Attic opened nearly 6 years ago with almost all vintage and used items. In addition to all the classic clothing that’s been added by popular demand, I’ve continued to purchase and restore heirloom clothing just because I love it, but I haven’t had much time lately to photograph my heirloom stock for the website. I even bought some fabulous antique christening gowns in London’s Portobello Market (think Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill!) when I went to the Premier Kids show in England last summer to search for new classic baby lines for the store. Under the reseller’s exemption, I won’t have to “test” the used or vintage items or have certifications from the manufacturers on hand (What manufacturers? Some of them were handmade 75 to 100 years ago!) But according to the most informative Ms. Valese, I could look at them to develop a comfort level about whether they contained lead. How long do you suppose I’d have to stare before that knowledge would seep into my brain?
